RIM Officially Releases the BlackBerry Twitter App
April 9, 2010 - By Justin E. Gehrke
Today, the social media giant Twitter announced the release of the official Twitter for BlackBerry app. While it is not the first Twitter app to be released for BlackBerry users, it is the first to be specifically designed to integrate seamlessly with the BlackBerry OS. The result of a cooperative design effort between RIM and Twitter, the client represents an excellent opportunity for RIM, which has been traditionally considered the choice for the corporate world, to extend already expanding reach into the consumer user market.

With the unabated growth of social media networks, such as Twitter, it is crucial for RIM to ensure that its BlackBerry devices remain both highly functional and attractive, in terms of applications, features, and design. The application features the standard functionality of similar apps for other mobile computing devices, such as the Apple iPhone. Following are some of the features and specifications that will interest most BlackBerry owners, as well as those who may be considering a switch to the long-held workhorse of smartphones:
- Support for Twitter lists
- @mention notifications
- Integration of email/text messages and tweets in a single box
- Supports Twitter searches
- Ability to tweet links directly from the device browser
- Language support in Italian, Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese, and German
- Ability to configure the display of fonts and tool-bars
- Push support for Twitter DMs
- Integrates camera and photo functionality
BlackBerry users who want to take advantage of the client’s features will need a device that meets the following minimum requirements:
- 64MB or greater device
- At least 750KB of available memory
- Software version 4.5 or later
